(My sanding helper... Son #3)

We have this very old, very ugly, but fairly useful file cabinet that we inherited from a former neighbor years ago. It's been an eye-sorer.

Since our recent move, my plan was not to put it in the house until it was spruced up.

Here are the steps that we used to refurbish our file cabinet.

Buy:
medium sandpaper
very fine sandpaper
2 cans Rust-oleum spraypaint (we bought the color Burgundy)
(These items in total cost me... $12.76.)

Also needed:
Socket Wrench
Masking Tape
Plastic sheeting or Newspaper
bucket of a little soap and water
old rags


Step One!
Remove handles using the socket wrench.
Remove rectangle tag plate.

Step Two!
Using the medium sandpaper, sand the entire outside of the file cabinet.
**remove any build-up of rust

Step Three!
Squirt a little soap in a bucket of water and rinse off the sandy residue.
Rinse with plain water.
Then wipe dry with an clean rag.

Step Four!
Place the file cabinet on the plastic sheeting or newspaper.

Step Five!
Close the drawers of the file cabinets.
Using the masking tape, cover the little mechanism that opens the drawers.

Step Six!
Shake the Rust-oleum spray paint can. Follow the instructions
on the can on how to apply the paint in a even coat.
(Very Involved Mom did not spray as evenly as Hard Working Dad. )

Step Seven!
Let Dry.

Step Eight!
While you wait, use the very fine sandpaper
and sand the metal hardware (handles & metal tag plate).

Step Nine!
After the paint dries (we waited a few days), reattach all the metal hardware.
And MOVE IT INTO THE HOUSE!!!

The Finished Refurbished File Cabinet
