I can't remember when our church stake started volunteering at 5-6 nearby elementary schools (each ward is assigned one school), but we've been helping every year for awhile. On Saturday, May 8 our stake changed their usual April dates to coincide with the official Mormon Helping Hands Day in California.
Photo by Very Involved MomI'm always amazed by the turnout that our ward gets every year. This year we had 62 adults and children who arrived at various times between 8:00 -11:30 AM to assist this particular neighborhood public school with weeding, sanding, cataloging books, picking up trash, removing tree limbs from a vacated home and LOTS of painting (a graffiti-infested fence, an entire back fence neighboring houses, a baseball backstop and a bike rack).
After the work was completed, all the wards from the stake came together at around 12:00 PM and enjoyed BBQ hot dogs, chips, carrots and cookies.
A great day to forget about ourselves and do something for others in our community!
